Women’s Parliamentary Network Members Talk to Representatives of Trade Union of Nurses and Medical Technicians of Serbia

Today, at the National Assembly House, the members of the Women’s Parliamentary Network met with representatives of the Trade Union of Nurses and Medical Technicians of Serbia.

Dragica Curcic, President of the Trade Union of Nurses and Medical Technicians of Serbia, said that the Serbian healthcare boasts close to 63,000 nurses and medical technicians, 94% of who are women. She outlined the problems of women working in healthcare, mainly nurses, such as a high incidence of disability among nurse staff, poor existential situation and insufficient empowerment. Speaking of the position of nurses on the behalf of the Trade Union, Radmila Simovic opined that the law does not recognise nurses sufficiently.

Marija Obradovic, coordinator of the Women’s Parliamentary Network, stressed that addressing the nurses’ problems calls for a dialogue between the Health and Family Committee, Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction and the Women’s Parliamentary Network on one side and the Trade Union of Nurses and Medical Technicians of Serbia on the other.

The members of the Women’s Parliamentary Network agreed that women in healthcare need to be empowered and their position needs to be regulated through a legal framework.

The meeting was attended by the following members of the Women’s Parliamentary Network: Dubravka Filipovski, Adriana Anastasov, Grozdana Banac, Ljiljana Beronja, Anamarija Vicek, Ljiljana Kosoric, Olena Papuga, Olivera Pauljeskic, Velinka Tosic, Aida Corovic and Katarina Susnjar.
